The
coach of an athletic team can plan, teach and guide, but once the
whistle blows, only the players are on the field. Even coaches like
Vince Lombardi, Casey Stengel, and John Thompson could only stand and
watch to see whether their powerful lessons had taken hold. It is
always up to the team captains and their charges to carry out the
coach's designs. So it was when the first Einstein High School Soccer
Team took the field in the winter of 1964-65.

The
captain was senior Bill Druhan, and he managed the players with
remarkable perseverance, exhibiting a real passion for the sport, as he
had for virtually everything he attempted. In 2011, Bill's life ended
following a battle with cancer. It is so fitting, however, that his
memory will live on, enabling a deserving young athlete to further his
education. Each year The Bill Druhan Memorial Fund will honor the
outstanding Einstein soccer player with college scholarship aid.
